Linen Closet Makeover

Today I’ll be sharing how I made over a spare closet in my home into a functional linen closet.

To begin, this was something I’ve always wanted. A linen closet. Just a place to store all my linens together. But, I actually never had one. Upon purchasing our first home I realized there is no linen closet!

So this happens to be the first project I am doing and I couldn’t be more excited!

I have searched for a few ideas online and fell in love with the idea of wallpaper in a closet. I loved the bold look of it!

So I began my search for wallpaper… until I realized how expensive they were.

Of course, the stubborn gal that I am, I wasn’t going to let the idea of wallpaper go. I quickly came up with stenciling a pattern to make it appear as if it is wallpaper.

If you want to create a similar look I’ll walk you through everything I did.

You\’ll Need:

  • 6 -1×2\’s
  • 4 Sanded Plywood (1/2 inch thickness)
  • 4 poplar board trims
  • Paint / Paint Supplies
  • Screws
  • Nails
  • Drill
  • Wood Filler
  • Stencil

We began by taking off the existing shelf and rod and began sanding.

Next, I patched the holes and tried to make the wall as even as possible.

Once dried, I sanded it once more.

Wallpaper Inspiration

This was my inspiration! It came out nothing like this picture but the dark color palette inspired me.

Here is the stencil I used.

The colors I chose: Valspar- Chimney Smoke 4010-1 and Quaking Bog 5005-2C

How to: Linen Closet Makeover

Step 1: Paint Base

I started with a dark base. The walls needed 2 coats so that is what I ended up doing.

Step 2: Stencil

Now on to the fun part! This was the most exciting part of the entire linen closet makeover.

TIP: Try to measure the width of your wall and paint on stencils accordingly to be evenly spaced. I experienced this the hard way and had to repaint it.

Step 3: Measure Shelf Space

SIDE NOTE: I wanted the space between my shelves to be 13″

that is why I added 2 more inches since my front covering will be 2 inches wide.

After measuring we (my husband) installed the bases.

Step 4: Install Plywood + Trim

Our shelf measured 43″ wide and 19″ deep

The trim is what gives the floating shelves their “thickness”. I chose it to be 2.5 inches. It is just poplar board trim.

Next, I filled in the nail holes and sanded. You can also poly the shelves, but I decided to skip that step.

Step 5: Organize Your Linen Closet
