How To Make a Natural Non-Toxic Disinfectant Spray

In today\’s post, I will be sharing how to make a natural, non-toxic disinfectant spray.

I am excited to be sharing a few recipes of natural cleaning products I use around my house. The reason I love these recipes is that they are safe, and they work!

I have been using them for years and want to share them with you. Especially with everything going on in the world, it is comforting to know that you don\’t have to use harsh and harmful chemicals to clean and disinfect your home.

Why should you make your own cleaning products?

There are many reasons to make your own cleaning sprays, but to name a few: it is eco-friendly, affordable, non-toxic, and powerful!

Cost-effective and Eco-friendly

Making your own cleaning and disinfecting sprays is cost-effective and eco-friendly. By buying products in bulk, whether it be vinegar, baking soda, or even hydrogen peroxide, you are paying less upfront and you are reducing packaging thus, reducing your carbon footprint.

It also eliminates the need to drive to the stores for frequent restocks, which saves you time and money all while bringing down the CO2 emissions.

Reusing glass bottles is another way to cut plastic waste. Glass is safer for the product, unlike plastic which is made of harmful chemicals. By using the same bottle for your cleaner you are again, reducing your carbon footprint.

Affordability

Making your own non-toxic natural cleaners is so affordable! Think about how many bottles of cleaners you can make just from vinegar and water. (More about how vinegar is so effective a little later. Keep reading)

Now think about how much one bottle of all-purpose cleaner or disinfectant would cost you at the store. It\’s usually between $4-$8.

So, I did some math and 1 gallon is 128 fluid ounces. Let\’s say you make a basic cleaner of 1/2 vinegar and 1/2 water. That is 256 oz. Now divide that into 16 oz (since that is the bottle size of my cleaning bottles). You are left with 16. That is 16 bottles of cleaner!

And how much would you pay for 16 bottles of cleaner at the store? Well, 16x $5 = $80

Oh, and 1 gallon of vinegar would cost you under $5.

I will leave the pondering up to you! But this is one major reason why I love making my own natural non-toxic disinfectant cleaners. You can\’t beat the affordability.

Non-toxic and powerful

By making your own cleaners, you know exactly what goes into them! The ingredients of these cleaners that I will be sharing today are pure. No toxic chemicals or fumes are involved.

Many store-bought cleaners are harsh and have airborne toxins which are not safe not only for you but especially for kids and pets.

That means while using harsh products you are smelling the fumes while cleaning and actually poisoning yourself.

In addition, most of the cleaners off the shelf contain fragrance. Artificial fragrance irritates our respiratory system.

Some symptoms of artificial fragrance reactions may include headaches, watery eyes, coughing, asthma attacks, rashes, and shortness of breath to name a few.

If you are ready to make better choices for yourself or your family but don’t know how to start, start by choosing products without fragrance. Better yet, start making your own products!

Ingredients To Make Your Natural Non-Toxic Disinfectant Spray

Vinegar

White distilled vinegar can be found in the food aisle of your grocery store. It is used for salad dressings and pickling.

Aside from using it internally, it is a powerful disinfectant. It has 5% acidity which means it is strong enough to kill viruses and bacteria.

Alcohol

Alcohol is an antiseptic. Meaning it kills bacteria, fungi, and viruses. Although do not use alcohol lower than 50%, it may not be as effective for disinfecting.

Vodka may also be used instead of rubbing alcohol.

Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide is another great disinfectant. It is a surface disinfectant according to CDC, you can read more on that here.

It is also a safe bleach alternative.

Essential Oils

Essential oils have many benefits due to their antimicrobial nature. Some of the best oils for cleaning include lemon, orange, pine, eucalyptus, tea tree, lavender, and peppermint.

Conclusion

I hope this was helpful to you and that it somehow convinced you to make your own natural non-toxic disinfectant spray! By using CDC-approved disinfectants, such as vinegar, rubbing alcohol, and hydrogen peroxide these natural products are just as powerful, if not more, than store-bought harmful cleaners for viruses, fungi, and bacteria.
