How To Make Drop Cloth Curtains (On a budget)

Ever seen those beautiful designer curtains that cost an arm and a leg? Well, today I will be sharing how I created curtains that look high-end using drop cloth (on a budget).

Drop cloth curtains are an affordable way to get beautiful custom-looking curtains if you put a little bit of work into them.

What is Drop Cloth?

Drop cloth is a canvas-type material used for many projects, one of which is painting. It is usually laid on the floor to protect the floor from paint drippings. Drop cloths come in different sizes and materials.

This is my second time making drop cloth curtains and this time I decided to try the 100% cotton drop cloths (some are made with polyester and cotton).

Drop Cloth Curtains Won’t Be Perfect

Drop cloth is usually imperfect. Some come with holes sewed up, some a little uneven. If you decided to create these curtains, you\’ll have to accept the fact they will not be as perfect as a pair of curtains you would buy from the store.

For example, the picture below shows some of the imperfections that you may see in the drop cloth.

Embrace imperfections and enjoy the process.

Personally, I enjoy creating something beautiful for my home. There\’s just something special about creating something yourself for your home.

What You\’ll Need:

How To Make Drop Cloth Curtains

Step 1: First, I washed and dried the curtains a few times. Many drop cloths will come with a smell and most importantly, you\’ll want to wash and dry them because they will shrink.

Step 2: Next, I ironed the drop cloth. You can do this later, but I just decided to iron before the sewing.

Step 3: Sew on the pleat tape. The pleat tape goes on the very top of the curtain. This is where the hooks will go.

My drop cloth came with stitching thru the middle. When the curtains are finished you will not see them. It will only show when you close the curtains, but that didn\’t bother me since they will mostly be opened anyway.

Step 4: Attach curtain pleat hooks and hang curtains to measure length. You can skip this step and just hold up the curtain to the rod to measure where you will need to hem them.

Step 5: Hem the bottom of the curtains so they will just barely touch the floor.

Step 6: After hemming, attach the pleat hooks to the pleat tape.

Lastly, attach hooks onto curtain rings and hang them.

Finally, enjoy the fruit of your labor! I hope this was helpful to you and inspired you to create something beautiful for your home.

I love the custom look these curtains give with only a fraction of the cost.

Let me know if you give these drop cloth curtains a try!
