Small Walk-in Closet Organization

Hi Friends! Today I will be sharing my Small Walk-in Closet Organization. This project was a long time coming to say the least.

Between moving to a different state, becoming home owners for the first time, and everything in between, you can see how this closet was the least of my priorities.

But finally, I had the chance to take the time and organize my closet space.

A clean space resembles a clean state of mind, and personally, it’s very important to me!

I’m a bit embarrassed to show the before, but here it is.

After the move, a few items didn’t have a home, so easily they went into my closet since it’s actually bigger than the previous closet we had.

This could be worse, but this is what happens when you don’t set a system in place and everything is sort of shoved wherever.

The top shelves are great storage! Just not when it isn’t organized or in mismatched bins and containers. And that’s what the closet had before.

I want to share with you some ways you can Simply Organize your Closet.

Also, here’s a post all about my favorite closet-organizing products, if you want to check that out.

My 5 Simple Steps To An Organized Closet

1. Remove Items that do not belong

Easily this is my number 1 tip! From my experience many items that don’t have a home somehow end up in the closet that is less seen. Just removing items that belong somewhere else frees up space, and helps you visualize your space better.

I usually like to create 3 piles when I’m in the process of cleaning and organizing. Keep, Donate, and Remove (belongs in a different place).

2. Declutter/ Donate

Go through all of your clothing to see what you will keep or donate. This may seem overwhelming if you have a large amount of clothing, but take it shelf by shelf not to over-stress yourself. Below are some reasons you may need to donate.

Donate :

  • What you no longer wear
  • What doesn’t fit you
  • What’s not your style
  • If it is wasn’t been worn in a year

I ended up donating 2 garbage bags of clothing which came as a surprise to me since I recently decluttered my closet before moving.

3. Separate Seasonal Clothing

I love doing this! Separating my winter clothing from summer clothing makes a huge difference. I usually store my winter clothes in storage bags from IKEA. Here is a good storage bag option from Amazon if you don’t live near an Ikea.

And it doesn’t have to be storage bags, baskets and bins work great as well, as long as seasonal clothing is put away and not taking up space.

4. Uniform Hangers/ Bins

Having uniform hangers and products, such as bins and baskets, make the biggest difference in the look of your closet. These velvet hangers are a small investment, but they really streamlined the look of the whole closet.

Also, to keep the hangers cohesive, I simply used black velvet hanger clips on the hangers for skirts.

5. Label for easy maintenance

I always try to label where I can. Labeling encourages us to put things back where they belong. It also helps to know exactly where everything is.

I used Neat Method magnetic labels to label the canvas bins.

Everything in the bins was file folded for maximum space and minimum maintenance.

Another way I spruced up the closet was by adding a shoe shelf. I love the low-profile shoe shelf I found, so I asked my husband to build one.

It turned out cheaper, and we made it the exact dimensions that we needed.

The hamper was another add-on that I love! It is helpful to have a larger hamper so it doesn’t overflow and create a mess.
